Our Food Pantry at 379 West 8th Avenue in Columbus, Ohio operates
three days a week and provides enough food for three meals and
snacks to our clients who may visit us once every other week.
On the average, we serve over 800 clients per month with that
number steadily increasing as more people become aware of our
services.
We have the unique distinction of being the only all vegetarian
food pantry in the Columbus area, meaning we do not distribute
products that contain meat, poultry, eggs, and fish or other seafood.
In addition, ours is the only program of its type that makes home
deliveries to elderly, disabled, and homebound persons.
The pantry receives weekly food donations from several local
vendors such as Wild Oats and Northwest Natural Foods and purchases some items
at reduced cost from Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Thanks to our local health
food donors, we can often supply organic produce and other organic
foodstuffs to our clients
This program has established itself as an important resource
in the community's continuum of services which case managers and
social services providers rely on to meet the food and nutrition
needs of their clients. Today, this service is appreciated by
thousands of senior citizens, underprivileged children, and handicapped
people throughout the country.
A Columbus City Councilman observed: "The average cost of an
SAF meal is only seventy-two cents. They can take $15,000 and
do what the average food program does for $100,000."
"I have fallen on hard times... learned of this program
from a friend. Every time I come the people have been cheerful,
giving and an inspiration in my time of grief. Thank you,
SAF, for the donations that provide my household and many
others with food. God bless you."
